Bonjour,

Hi   ralderton’s right that every operator sets its own pet rules, but since most of your route (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia) is outside what I can confirm in detail, let me at least nail down the two legs on your return route I do have solid, current info on: Italy and Switzerland.

On Trenitalia (Italy), there’s no dog-size limit, but if your small dog fits in a carrier (max 70x30x50cm) it travels completely free, no ticket needed, as long as it stays inside the carrier for the whole trip. You just tick the “travelling with your dog” option when you book your own seat — website, app, station counter or self-service machine — it’s the same transaction, not a separate purchase. (If she’s too big for a carrier, it’s leash+muzzle plus a paid dog ticket, roughly €5 on weekdays.)

On SBB (Switzerland), small dogs that fit in a bag or carrier on your lap travel free as hand luggage; a dog too big for that needs a leash and a half-fare 2nd-class “dog ticket” bought the same way as your own ticket (travelcard discounts can apply). Worth double-checking current CHF pricing on SBB’s own site since I don’t have an exact current figure to quote you.

For the Germany/Austria/Hungary/Serbia/Croatia/Bosnia legs — sorry, Gossippet only covers Italy, Switzerland, UK, France, Spain and Sweden right now (expanding over time), so seat61 and each operator’s own site genuinely are your best bet there, same as ralderton said.
