delay/Repay

Hi,

I submitted a compensation request 2months ago after train was cancelled and the rail company made me buy new tickets.

i have not had any update other than acknowledgement of claim. Is this service normal and how long does it normally take?

Thanks

It should normally get a response within a month, but many claims since the end of July are taking much longer. You could ask in your request when you can expect an update, just reply to the acknowledgement. Don't create a new request, since that will only make the queue longer.

Just curious:

  1. Which company made you buy new tickets and additionally not offer to refund those new tickets themselves?
  2. Was the new connection with another company?
  3. Did you really have to buy regular tickets or just new pass reservations?

It was Iryo and we were travelling from Madrid to Malaga. Our train with them was cancelled due to strike action and we weren’t notified so showed up for the scheduled train and it wasn’t on the departures board.

we went to their ticket office and they said there was nothing they could do as purchased through Interrail so had to deal with them. There were no seat reservations available for any train to travel thst day

Iryo said only option was to buy regular tickets on another train and the next happened to be their service. This cost us €210

Assuming both the original train and the new train were operated by Iryo, they were breaking EU law, in particular Regulation 2021/782 article 18. They were obliged to rebook you on their next available train free of charge, regardless of where you had booked originally.

So in short, you are then entitled to:

  1. Reimbursement of your additional expenses.
  2. Compensation on the pass.
  3. Compensation on the reservations.
