Help with options from Exeter to Sorrento

Hi everyone

I need to travel from Exeter to Sorrento return in November. I'm bewildered by the options.

The helpful Man in Seat 61 site, says the fastest & cheapest way is via a stopover in Milan. But is this still the cheapest when you factor in a hotel night in Milan (the best I can find near the station is about £100).

I've looked at the European sleeper from Brussels to Milan, which would save an overnight stay, however I can't see how to book sleeping accommodation on the train, it is only offering me a regular second class seat.

And I've looked for the Stuttgart to Venice Nightjet but can only find options where I would have to change in the middle of the night.

If anyone can give me any advice or opinion I would be most grateful.

Thank you!

You can book a sleeping berth via the European Sleeper website. Just change it from 1x adult to Interrail Reservation.

If you go with day trains, an alternative to breaking the journey in Milan is Turin or Lyon. You could look at hotel prices in those cities. However you’d need to leave Exeter before 6am to reach Italy in a single day (taking the 1525 from Paris).

The accommodation choice comes after you choose the date. You forgot to mention a date, so I can't check what the situation is on your date.

That night train is direct, see nightjet.com. What made you think it is not?

You might also consider a night stop in Paris. But if we don't know the actual date of travel it's hard to help. Exeter to Paris should get you to Paris early evening. Next day from Gare de Lyon  There is also the possiblity of staying 'not' near the station in Milan and getting a bus to your accommodation, or staying in the Ostello Bello hostel, which is very close to the station.

Personally I would route via Brussels, and night train to Milan, much easier than via Paris and gets you to Milan Garibaldi  at 11.40. Then Milan to Sorrento via Napoli Afragola.  Stay overnight in Naples, Afragola is a suburban station so fine somewhere close.
