Question

How to add an inbound journey to my pass, making use of a train, a night ferry, and a train again

Hi all, we will be traveling in the UK. Our outbound journey is with Eurostar. We have no issues with that. Our final destination is Durham. From Durham we will travel to Newcastle to take the DFDS Ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam (IJmuiden), departure 5PM. Upon arrival in the Netherlands at 9.45AM we will take a train to our home town. So we will cross the border without a train. The planner only gives itineraries by train.
The challenge is: how do I add this trip to my pass?

Thank you for your advice.

You don’t need to add the ferry to Rail Planner, and you don’t need to cross the border by train.

Just add the journey as far as Newcastle, and then another journey from your starting point in NL. As soon as you add a journey in NL, it will trigger your inbound day.

Thank you, but that would make it two travel days instead of one inbound journey. I think that inbound journeys usually would be one trip, e.g. an inbound journey by night train from Muenich all the way to Groningen would count as one trip?

Its only possible with 1 travel day if there is no change between trains after midnight.

It doesn’t make any difference whether it’s an inbound day or a regular travel day. You can take as many trains as you like before midnight, and you can stay on the train well into the following day. But if you board a new train after midnight, it uses a second travel day.

The travel allowance works in terms of days on which you travel by train and not by whether or not you think it is all part of the 1 journey.

In your case you are using a travel day to get from Durham to Newcastle, and the next day you are using another entirely different travel day to get from Ijmuiden to home.

A quick check shows that Durham to Newcastle takes 20 minutes and can be bought for £3.80, so I suggest (if you are short on travel days) you just buy a ticket for cash for that trip, get the boat and then use your inbound travel day to get from Ijmuiden home.
