Unsure if it is still worth going interrailing for me

InterrailTravelling

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all good.

I have a specific interrailing question that I would like to be answered, and I will need a reply soon because today is the last day I can refund my pass, as I purchased it a week ago  as part of the 50% discount. This was on a bit of a whim, not really sure if I was going to use it or not. It is now getting towards the deadline (this is today) by which the pass can be refunded and I will need some more information, quickly as to if it is worth progressing with.

It is a months long continuous interrail pass and I will be starting in London, UK.

Due to work commitments I will (realistically) only be able to take up to 13 potentially 14 days off holiday (this is Monday to Friday so two and a half weeks working days) to go interrailing. This could be extended to 18 days if I include the two weekends . So this means S, S, M, T, W, T, F, S, S, M, T, W, T, F, S, S, M, T, W. Realistically however I can’t see myself taking the additional half week off so will probably only be 14 days (full weeks).

I do not have a precise itinerary yet, however I am anticipating that it could be one of these four routes

Route 1:

UK (I live here so will start here) > Brussels > Amsterdam > Cologne > Vienna > Prague > Back to UK

Route 2:

UK > Bergen (this will be a flight) > Oslo > Gothenburg > Copenhagen > Hamburg > Amsterdam > Brussels > Back to UK

Route 3:

UK > Brussels > Amsterdam > Cologne > Vienna > Zagreb > Back to UK (probably flight)

Route 4:

UK > Brussels > Amsterdam > Cologne > Something involving Switzerland. I haven’t gotten much further with this itinerary yet.

Basically I am looking for some advice as to if it will be worth me proceeding with the interrail pass or not, especially in regards to reservation fees etc. Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

Edit - I paid £303 for my pass, so would need to keep costs below this figure if booking the trains myself.

You don’t say what kind of pass you bought, but I’ll assume from the price that it’s a 1 month continuous second class.

You also don’t say where in the UK you’re starting from.

But either way, it’s hard to see that you wouldn’t get good value. Remember, when comparing prices, that the pass is very flexible. The cheapest cash tickets aren’t.

What you paid is cheaper than a 15 day pass anyway.

Don’t sweat it, and enjoy your trip!

Sorry that’s my mistake, will edit my post.

I have a months long continuous interrail pass.

I will be starting from London. I can’t see how flexible the pass is when I already have to make additional reservations/book hostels etc. in advance and I’m not sure that I will do much changing because I expect I will plan in advance quite a lot.

I was contemplating refunding it for a 7 days or a 5 days in one month pass, this might be more cost effective especially if I can only go for two weeks. The cost savings are substantial, this being £208 and £249, compared to £303 (months long continuous). What do you feel about this option?

You’ll have to make reservations for Eurostar. The rest is (or can be) all optional, depending on the time of year.

I wouldn’t make hotel reservations that aren’t flexible, but that depends on your approach I guess.

If you’re happy to lock everything in now, then add up the prices and see where it lands.

Thank you. I wouldn’t be too happy about not booking hostels beforehand because I don’t want to be in a situation where I don’t have anywhere to stay for the night.

Not sure if I will have time to do the adding up but will try and do this and see what it comes to!

Hello! Thank you very much for your help! I decided to keep my pass as the next pass along (5 days within one month was only £30 cheaper than the continuous one. At least I have made a decision.
