Best Route from Munich through the Alps

Would really like to go from Munich, to Salzburg, to Innsbruck, to maybe Bergenz back to Munich.

Is this a good route and approximately how long would the trip be? Looking to make it a day trip to ride the train and enjoy the views.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Munich – Salzburg – Bischofshofen – Wörgl – Innsbruck – Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Munich should be possible. The towns mentioned are stations where you might have to change trains. In Bischofshofen and Innsbruck you will have to change trains anyway. Travel time for Munich – Bischofshofen is between 2:30 and less than 3 hours. For Bischofshofen – Innsbruck around 3 hours and for Innsbruck – Munich a little bit less than 3 hours. Trains between Innsbruck and Munich via Garmisch-Partenkirchen run every 2 hours, on the other parts about every hour. To make a detailed plan use the travels planners of ÖBB or DB as suggested by @rvdborgt . Use “via Zell am See” for Bischofshofen – Innsbruck and “via Garmisch-Partenkirchen” for Innsbruck – Munich in the travel planners. Connection times may be short, but should work and if a train is delayed you will know when the next one is running. It might be better to do the trip the other way round as mentioned above and have the leg with less trains first. Do not make any advance “bookings” ore seat reservations. You should consider when there will be daylight, if you wish to see scenery, and you must have your passport with you even it is unlikely that there will be passport chacks by boarder police.

Look up timetables on bahn.com or fahrplan.oebb.at.
