Booking Seats and Reservations - in the Interrail App or not ?

Forum|alt.badge.img

Hi All,  I am due to use a 5 day global pass with my kids at Xmas ( 20th to 27th ) and my question was about whether people buy tickets via the Interrail App or not.  Do you go to the train provider instead ?  If so , what is the App mainly used for ?

Thank you in advance

I buy reservations directly from the train provider if it is possible. As this saves you the 2€ charge that interrail adds on top of the reservation cost and in some cases allows you to pick specific seats.

But it is not always possible to book reservations directly.

Seat 61 has an excellent guide to buying reservations - including when it’s best to buy them from Interrail, and when to go elsewhere.

You can't book anything at all in the app. It can only forward to some of the websites where you can book, including the Interrail website. I don't use it, mainly because of the added costs, the worse refund/exchange conditions, and the impossibility to choose seats or even indicate a preference. The Rail planner app is there to manage your pass.

whether people buy tickets via the Interrail App or not . . . the pass *is* your ticket.  You just need to clarify the terminology in your head.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that with your name you might live in the UK - so, using the system there as an example an interrail pass holder can use their pass in their app to get on to an LNER service without paying anything.  The pass is the ticket.  Now, if they wanted to reserve a specific seat, the app does nothing.  They need to go to the LNER (or other UK carrier) site and reserve their seat there.  The reservation does not tie in to the app in any way.

Read the seat61 link above and almost all should be explained.
