Connecting trains

When changing trains, it may be possible to catch an earlier train which is late. In this case it is not possible to add the train, which is late, to the pass because the regular departure time of this train is earlier than the the arrival time of the first train.

In this case:

  1. I disable the first train from the pass in order to add te second (late) train to the pass. But then the statistics are incorrect.
  2. I add the second train manually to the pass. But only if I have time before the ticket control.

is there another possibility to solve this problem?

I don’t know what the ‘correct’ answer is, but I usually go with option A. I don’t think there’s a better option.

A better solution would be if the app allowed overlapping trains, perhaps with a warning, rather than outright preventing it.

There are two different times you will need to show your pass/QR code in these scenarios . . .

  1. To get past a ticket barrier.  In general you just need a valid ticket.  It doesn’t matter to the ticket barrier which train you are getting.  In fact, I’m pretty sure the ticket barriers are by design relatively easy going on this.  There is no realistic way for thousands of ticket barriers to be kept up to date with all arrivals and departures and real time location of all relevant trains.
  2. To keep the ticket inspector happy.  In this case you need a specific ticket that is valid for the specific train.

What I normally do in these situations (when time is of the essence and stopping to change things from train A to train B runs the risk of missing whichever train comes first) is retain my existing trip details for long enough to get through the barriers and on to the platform side of things.  Then once I figure out if I’m in time for train B deactivate train A, enter settings for train B, activate it and eventually disable train A.

Hello,

Sorry, but it’s not the problem of barriers.

The official answer is to add the second train manually. Then overlapping is possible.

IMO the app should give a warning about overlapping trains, but not make it impossible. I already asked about it several years ago but at that time, Interrail didn't want to allow this.
