December Schedule

Hello. My family of 4 from Australia bought an interrail global pass for our trip to Europe this December. Our transport between cities will be entirely by rail. The itinerary looks like:

20 Dec - Frankfurt → Nuremberg

23 Dec - Nuremberg → Salzburg
26 Dec - Salzburg → Lucerne
29 Dec - Lucerne → Strasbourg
2 Jan - Strasbourg → Paris

I would prefer to reserve seats on all trains just for peace of mind. I know about the December train schedule change but need some clarification.

Does this mean most of the schedules for the trains we will be taking will be released soon (mid October) but I will not be able to buy tickets and make seat reservations until mid December? Will these trains be very busy at this time of year in peoples experiences? What would a seasoned train traveler plan to do in my place?

thank you

German railways release their new timetable on 14/10. From that date, you should be able to bok reservations for your journeys in/from/to Germany.

Use this page to see where best to book your reservations:

Keep in mind that, although some domestic trains in Switzerland can be reserved, it's a waste of money to do that. Also for a family of 4 and also around the holidays. This means that Lucerne-Strasbourg doesn't need reservations  and Salzburg-Lucerne only until Zurich.
