Activate Pass - what is this about ?

Forum|alt.badge.img

Hi,  I bought 3 global passes, one for me and 2 for my children , about 3 months ago.    When do i need to activate them ?   And should i connect the childrens passes to my ‘ trip’ ?

What is the downside to activating a pass now or waiting until later ?

Thanks in advance

Activation is explained here:

https://www.interrail.com/en/interrail-passes/interrail-mobile-pass/getting-started

You can do that anytime, but there's no need to do it in advance. In fact many people advise against doing it in advance, because you can only cancel activation before validity has started, which is at midnight. If anything happens after that, e.g. you wake up ill, then it will be too late to cancel and you can loose travel days. You can activate with a start date well in the future, play around for a bit and then cancel the activation again.

Each pass needs its own trip. You can copy a trip though, and add a journey to multiple trips in one go.

Thanks for this .  I think I am getting it.   I have added my pass but not activated it yet .  I have also added my children's passes to my device as well.

I have created a trip called Xmas Trip.  I have , it seems , connected my pass to that trip.

This is where i am getting a bit lost

Do i need multiple  ‘trips’ for my holiday.   I have a 5 day global pass for each of us.  I plan to use one day going from Paris to say Strasbourg.  Then the next day , use my 2nd day of the 5 day Global Pass going from Strasbourg to Lindau.    And then repeated until i use all 5 days and get back to Paris.

Do i need to create 5 separate trips or will one trip suffice ?   Once i know that I think i can then add my children's pass to the ‘ trip ‘ or ‘ trips’ that i have created.

Thanks in advance

One Trip will suffice - just put all your journeys in it. In fact multiple Trips would be a problem, because you can only link your pass to one Trip at a time.

Ok thanks   So i can link my childrens pass to the Xmas Trip where my pass is

Then activate nearer the time ?   Pros  and cons of activating now or later?

There’s nothing to be gained by activating ahead of time. It doesn’t ‘reserve’ anything. You can do it on the day of departure.

There is a big downside. Plans can change, travel could be disrupted, you could get ill or oversleep. If you’ve activated your pass, then you may wish you hadn’t.

No, you cannot. As I wrote, each pass needs to have its own trip.

Yes, I have duplicated the Xmas Trip for my children with an initial for their names so i know which on belongs to which child

And to be clear.  When i have purchased a ticket i add it to my trip ( and for the childrens trip ) and show that plus the pass when i get on the train  ?

The pass is your ticket. But for trains with mandatory reservations thats how you do it with the reservation. Usually you get them as a pdf.

Ah.  right.    Thanks very useful.  So definitely worth working out which trains that I plan to use need a reservation

QQ- how do they know how many times you have used your pass.  Mine is limited to 5 days of travel.   Also, what is the point of adding details of your trip in the App?

You have to activate and add a journey to you Pass before you get on that train. (Activating a travel day requires an internet connection)

oh ok.  I will need to figure that out.  Do you reserve the seat first then activate?   Also,  Have you noticed that the App and the Website do align?.  My Xmas trip is in teh App but not the website  Is that common? .

The part on the website is only for purchasing reservations. (The trips there are not linked to the trip with your journey details in the app).

Activating a travel day is something you usually only do on the travel day. Reservations you usually buy in advance, only some trains require reservations.

Reservations can also be bought directly from some train companies (that way you save the 2€ fee the interrail reservation service adds to cost of the reservation)

This is a pretty good guide to reservations:

how do they know how many times you have used your pass . . . they know because when you activate a day the app generates a QR code which is the ticket you show to the inspector or at the ticket barrier.  Given that this code is effectively “free travel” you can be sure that the app contacts the mothership to say “1 day used, 4 remain”
