Howdy! My best friend and I are planning a trip to backpack around Europe in about 11 months. I have never been to Europe, she has. We want to see as much as we can in as many countries as possible. We will be there for about a month. We are curious on which pass we should get, (the month, 22 day, 15 day, etc) as we do not want to be super tied down to an itinerary. We do want the freedom of waking up one morning and deciding we want to go see the sunset in another country (if that is possible). Any guidance is appreciated!

This really depends what you intend to do and how long you are staying in Europe. If you want to be about a month here and do not intend to travel by train every day, then would be a 15-days out of two months probably fine. Yoi may still decide in the morning if you use a travel day that very day or stay one day longer. In many countries you may still travel without booking in advance and if seat reservations are compulsory in many cases this does not need to be done long in advance. The only severe restriction is that you are allowed to travel on your pass on 15 days only or need to buy a regular ticket. For short trips this might be cheaper as the average per-day price of a pass.
If you really want full flexibility than go for a 22-days in a row or 1-month in row pass. You need than only to buy seat reservations, if they are compulsory. Contingents for pass users, which might sell out exist on Eurostar. Other trains usally do not sell out far in advance or at all if it is not a peak travel day. But this depands strngly on the country.
